Spotlight in the Community

John has been performing, directing, writing and producing around the Rochester, NY area since his arrival in 1996. Look below for information about upcoming appearances, details about shows you are involved in, or how to sign up for an acting or improv workshop.

Note these are events outside of the Spotlight Studio classes that all are welcome to participate in.

Summer/Winter Theatre Camps

John directs or produces Summer Theatre Camps which focuses on teaching the skills necessary for musical theatre performance. Each camp ends in a performance open to the public.
  • Summer Stage
    Five-week program in Victor, NY - for 7th graders through college freshman. Held in July/August.
  • Webster Spotlight Theatre
    Week-long program in Webster, NY - for elementary, middle and high school students. Typically held in August.
  • Gananda Community Youth Theatre
    Musical Theatre Camp for middle school students in Gananda, NY

Theatre Workshops

John and Spotlight Theatre Arts produces and manages a number of theatre-related workshops around the Rochester area, typically in conjunction with schools, churches and recreation departments. Contact John if you'd like bring one of these workshops to your organization.

Workshops in Acting, Improv and Balloon twisting are being offered through Gates Parks and Recreation Department and Webster Recreation and Parks Department.

  • Spotlight Theatre - Musical Theatre
    Musical Theatre Mini Camp for high school (spotlight), middle school (BrightSpots) and elementary school (Sparkles) students
  • Spotlight Theatre - Acting Workshop
    Acting-intensive Mini Camp for middle and high school students
  • Musical Theatre Audition Workshop
    Several-day workshop focusing on the skills needed to audition for a musical. Includes acting, dance and singing
  • Improv Workshop
    Several-day workshop focusing on discovering and improving your own Improvisational skills
  • Write Your Own Production Workshop
    Multi-day workshop that walks participants through the development, writing, rehearsing and performance of a show

Professional Productions

John performs with many professional theatre productions in the Rochester area.
  • Nuts & Bolts
    Assistant Director and Regular performer with Comedy Improv performing monthly at UpStage3, Downstairs Cabaret, Spotlight Theatre, and other venues.
  • Great Lakes Productions
    Regular performer in "Joey and Maria's Comedy Wedding", "Joey and Maria's 25th Anniversary", "West Side High School Reunion" and "The Soapranoes Retirement Party".
  • Downstairs Cabaret
    John was recently cast in "Flanagan's Wake" at DCT, a partly improved, completely funny production!
  • Magic, Danger, Suspense and Silliness
    The two man Solo show with Larry Moss, which is the result of a couple kids ignoring the warnings and "trying this at home."
  • How to Catch a Mouse
    Educational balloon stage show, performed at schools around Western and Central New York

Community and School Productions

John keeps himself busy directing, music directing and producing for Community Theatre groups, High Schools and Middle Schools in the area.
  • Gananda Community Youth Theatre
    A winter weekend theatre camp for kids grades 1-8. John looks forward to directing with this group every year. This year they are producing "Alice In Wonderland" for grades 1 through 5 and "Joseph" for grades 6 through 8. Past shows include "Aladdin, Jr", "Cinderella", "Seussical Jr.", "Jungle Book Kids", "Willy Wonka Jr" and "Sound of Music".
  • Gates Community Theater
    John is the Artistic Director for this organization and directs one production a year with them. This year's production is "Willy Wonka".
  • Celebration of One Acts
    Co-sponsored by St. John Fisher College. Showcases work of local authors, actors and directors
  • Theatre-In-A-Day
    Unique theatre experience that locks up several directors, authors, and a bunch of hungry actors in a room for 24 hours. The result is exciting theatre in a really short amount of time!
  • St. John Fisher College
    John teaches theatre related courses such as "Acting for Beginners" and "Shakespeare Live!"
  • Greece Olympia High School
    This is John's fifth year directing at Greece Olympia High School. The show for the 2008-2009 school year is "Beauty and the Beast". Past shows include "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" "Cinderella" "Anything Goes" and "Throughly Modern Millie".
  • Gananda Middle School
    This is John's third year directing at Gananda Middle School. The show for the 2008-2009 school year is "Annie, Jr". Past shows include "Disney's Mulan, Jr" and "Fiddler on the Roof".
  • Greece Arcadia Middle School
    This is John's second year directing at Greece Arcadia Middle School. The show for the 2008-2009 school year is "Annie, Jr". Past shows include "Disney's Mulan, Jr".
